On December 2, 2023, the U.S. Department of Energy announced it will allocate up to $800 million to support the development of small modular reactors (SMRs) by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and the private company Holtec. This funding is part of a broader initiative to address rising electricity demand in the United States, driven by factors such as artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency mining, and electric vehicles.

Project Details and Funding Allocation

The TVA is set to receive up to $400 million in federal cost-shared funding for the development of a GE Vernova Hitachi BWRX-300 reactor at the Clinch River site in Tennessee, along with other related projects. Similarly, Holtec will also receive up to $400 million to construct two SMRs at its Palisades site in Michigan. Holtec aims to reopen the 800-megawatt Palisades conventional reactor, which was shut down in 2022 after over 50 years of operation. The plant previously secured a $1.52 billion loan guarantee during President Joe Biden's administration, with more than $490 million already disbursed.

Potential Benefits and Challenges

Proponents of SMRs argue that these reactors could be constructed in factories, potentially reducing costs and construction times compared to traditional nuclear plants. However, there are significant challenges ahead. As of now, no SMRs are under construction in the United States, and there are ongoing concerns about whether they can generate electricity as economically as larger reactors. Additionally, the issue of long-lasting radioactive waste remains unresolved, as there is currently no permanent repository for such waste.
