Vulcan Energy Resources Ltd. has successfully secured a financing package of €2.2 billion ($2.56 billion) to fund the construction of its Lionheart lithium and renewable energy project in the Upper Rhine Valley, Germany. The project is expected to produce 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM) annually, sufficient for approximately 500,000 electric vehicle batteries, and generate 275 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable energy and 560 GWh of heat for local consumers.

Financing Breakdown

The financing package comprises various contributions from both public and private sectors. Key investors include the German government, which has committed €204 million, and the KfW Raw Materials Fund, investing €150 million for a 14% stake in Vulcan’s German subsidiary. Additional support comes from the European Investment Bank, which is providing a €250 million loan, and Export Finance Australia, contributing €120 million. The overall financing structure includes €1.185 billion in senior debt from a consortium of 13 financial institutions, alongside equity investments from strategic partners such as Siemens and HOCHTIEF.

Project Timeline and Construction

Construction of the Lionheart project is set to commence imminently, with Vulcan's board having approved the final investment decision (FID). The project is anticipated to take approximately two and a half years to complete, with commercial production expected to begin in 2028. The company has already secured supply contracts with major industry players, including LG Energy Solution, Umicore, Stellantis, and Glencore, ensuring a market for its lithium output.
