BAFTA's Progress on Diversity and Inclusion Targets

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has reported significant progress in diversifying its membership, which currently stands at approximately 14,000 members. Following a comprehensive review initiated in 2020, BAFTA set specific targets to enhance diversity and inclusion within its ranks. As of 2025, the organization has nearly met its goals: 19.85% of members identify as belonging to minority ethnic groups, 12.84% are Deaf, Disabled, or Neurodivergent, and 13.29% identify as LGB+. However, the target of 50% female representation has not yet been fully achieved, with women currently making up 43% of the membership. Notably, 51% of new members who joined since 2020 identify as women, indicating a positive trend toward gender parity.

BAFTA has outlined ambitious plans for further increasing diversity. Starting in 2026, the organization aims to raise the percentage of Deaf, Disabled, and Neurodivergent members to 18% by 2030, aligning with the UK working-age population statistics. Additionally, BAFTA plans to attract 25% of new members from low socio-economic backgrounds by the same year. The organization is also focusing on improving representation of People of Colour in senior industry roles and increasing the number of women in the gaming sector and craft roles, where representation currently falls below 40%.

BAFTA Chair Sara Putt expressed pride in the progress made, emphasizing the importance of reflecting the diverse talent and experiences within the film, games, and television industries. She acknowledged ongoing systemic challenges that hinder opportunities for underrepresented groups, particularly disabled individuals and those from working-class backgrounds. Andrew Miller, a BAFTA Board Trustee and member of the Disability Advisory Group, highlighted the necessity of sustained effort and commitment to achieve meaningful inclusion.

Despite the advancements, some critics argue that the current figures still fall short of the ambitious targets set by BAFTA. The ongoing underrepresentation of women in specific sectors, such as gaming and crafts, has raised concerns about the effectiveness of current initiatives. Critics emphasize that while progress is commendable, it is essential for BAFTA to maintain momentum and address these disparities proactively.
