Lithuania Declares Emergency Over Balloon Smuggling from Belarus

Lithuania's Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene announced on December 7, 2023, that the country will declare a national "emergency situation" in response to an influx of balloons launched from Belarus, which are being used to smuggle cigarettes. The balloons, which can ascend to altitudes of up to 10 kilometers, have repeatedly forced the closure of Vilnius and Kaunas airports, stranding thousands of passengers. Lithuanian officials assert that the balloons are deliberately directed into critical flight paths, constituting a hybrid attack on national aviation security. In recent weeks, at least 60 balloons have been reported, with 40 entering areas vital for aviation safety. The situation has intensified since October, prompting Lithuania to close its border crossings with Belarus temporarily. In retaliation, Belarus restricted the movement of over 1,000 Lithuanian trucks, which remain stranded within its borders.
