The Journey to the Birth of the World's First IVF Boy

In the early 1970s, Grace MacDonald faced the devastating news that her fallopian tubes were blocked, leaving her unable to conceive. Living in Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow, she sought alternatives after being told that adoption options were limited. In 1976, she learned about a groundbreaking fertility treatment developed by gynaecologist Patrick Steptoe and physiologist Robert Edwards, which involved in vitro fertilization (IVF). After undergoing extensive testing, MacDonald was accepted into their pioneering IVF program.

MacDonald's first attempt at IVF in February 1977 ended in failure, leaving her heartbroken. However, with support from Steptoe, Edwards, and embryologist Jean Purdy, she persevered. By May 1977, inspired by the success of another participant, Lesley Brown, who was pregnant with the first IVF baby, MacDonald embarked on her second attempt. This time, the procedure was successful, and she became pregnant with the second IVF baby in history.

On January 14, 1979, during a snowstorm, MacDonald went into labor. Although Steptoe and Edwards were delayed in reaching the hospital, her gynaecologist successfully delivered her son, Alastair, who weighed 5lb 12oz. MacDonald described the moment she held her son as overwhelming, stating, "I told him I loved him and that it was about time – I’d waited so long for him." Alastair is now 46 years old and serves as a first officer in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

She reflected on the emotional support they provided each other during their journeys. Today, she feels honored to have contributed to the acceptance of IVF, which has since led to the birth of over 13 million babies worldwide. "I will always count myself blessed as a result," she stated, acknowledging the dedication of Steptoe, Edwards, and Purdy in making her dream of motherhood a reality.
