Milan Cortina Winter Olympics Faces Ticket Sales Challenges

12/7/2025, 2:16:35 AM

Current Status of Ticket Sales and Venue Preparations

With just two months remaining until the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, local organizers are grappling with significant challenges. As of now, slightly more than half of the 1.5 million tickets available for the games have been sold, amounting to approximately 850,000 tickets. This situation has raised concerns among officials, especially as construction on key venues, including the main hockey arena, remains incomplete. Andrea Varnier, CEO of the local organizing committee, expressed optimism, stating that local fans typically show interest closer to the event, and the commencement of the torch relay in Rome is expected to boost ticket sales.

To stimulate interest, organizers implemented a Black Friday promotion offering 20% discounts on tickets, and additional incentives such as lift passes for eight euros ($9) for ski areas in Lombardy have been introduced. Varnier noted that recent ticket releases for high-demand events, such as the opening ceremony at the San Siro stadium and the men’s hockey gold medal game, sold out quickly, indicating a potential uptick in interest.

Venue Readiness and Upcoming Events

The Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena, a new 16,000-seat venue on the outskirts of Milan, has faced delays, with a scheduled test event postponed to January. Varnier acknowledged the challenges but assured that preparations are on track. In the meantime, a secondary hockey venue at the Rho Fiera convention center will host under-20 world championship games, serving as a test for the facilities.

The opening ceremonies will be unique, featuring simultaneous events in multiple locations, including Cortina d’Ampezzo, Livigno, and Predazzo, in addition to Milan. This approach aims to enhance community involvement and has been positively received by the National Olympic Committees (NOCs).

Official Statements and Responses

Andrea Varnier emphasized the importance of the torch relay and the community's engagement, stating, “It’s a very important message to have the athletes also staying in the mountain villages to be able to participate in the ceremony.” He also highlighted the strong merchandise sales at the newly opened Milan Cortina store in Piazza del Duomo as a positive sign for the event's overall appeal.

Criticism and Opposition

Despite the optimism from organizers, the slow ticket sales and construction delays have drawn criticism from various stakeholders. Concerns have been raised regarding the potential impact on the overall atmosphere of the games, especially following the largely fan-less Beijing Winter Games in 2022 due to the pandemic.

Conflicting Reports and Gaps

While Varnier remains hopeful about ticket sales improving as the event approaches, the current figures indicate a need for a significant increase in sales to meet expectations. The effectiveness of promotional strategies and community engagement efforts will be crucial in determining the success of the upcoming Winter Olympics.
