Death of Levi Aron, Convicted Murderer of Hasidic Boy, Marks a Grim Chapter

Levi Aron, the man convicted of kidnapping and murdering 8-year-old Yehuda “Leiby” Kletzky in Brooklyn in 2011, has died in prison at the age of 49. Aron was serving a sentence of 40 years to life at the Wende Correctional Facility near Buffalo, New York. His death was anticipated due to a medical condition, although no specific cause has been reported by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS).

Leiby Kletzky disappeared on July 11, 2011, while walking home alone from his day camp in the Borough Park neighborhood. Despite his parents having practiced the route with him, Kletzky missed a turn and was lured into Aron’s vehicle, a 1990 Honda Accord. Aron, who was Orthodox but not Hasidic, took Kletzky to his home, where he drugged and subsequently dismembered the boy.

The disappearance prompted a massive search effort, involving helicopters, canine teams, and approximately 5,000 volunteers from the local Orthodox Jewish community and other groups. Surveillance footage from the abduction led police to Aron’s apartment, where they discovered parts of Kletzky’s body in a freezer. Further remains were located in a suitcase in a dumpster in Greenwood Heights, following directions provided by Aron.
