Core Event: Increasing Adoption of Smart Home Technology

A recent survey indicates that over 80% of American homes now incorporate smart technology, reflecting a significant trend in consumer behavior towards connected devices. This shift encompasses a variety of gadgets, including smart refrigerators, doorbells, and robot vacuums.

Key Findings from the Survey

Conducted by OnePoll, the survey involved 5,000 homeowners who reported spending an average of more than $2,000 on smart gadgets and appliances over the past five years. Notably, 55% of respondents expressed intentions to expand their smart home setups within the next year. The most common devices include smart speakers (36%), robot vacuum cleaners (22%), and smart locks (15%).

Among smart tech owners, 17% identified as early adopters, purchasing new products shortly after their release. Conversely, 52% prefer established devices with proven reliability. The survey also revealed that 10% of participants upgrade or replace their smart home technology annually, while 37% do so every two to five years.

Consumer Preferences and Concerns

Respondents highlighted several desired features in their smart devices, including real-time alerts (38%), battery backup (36%), and remote control capabilities (33%). Additionally, 22% of participants indicated a desire for more convenience and customization options.

However, the survey identified significant barriers to acquiring smart home devices. The primary concern for 53% of respondents was cost, followed by privacy and security issues (33%) and concerns about device reliability (23%).

Energy Efficiency as a Priority

The survey also revealed that energy efficiency is a critical consideration for consumers. Approximately 60% of participants reported increased utility bills over the past year, prompting 32% of smart tech owners to prioritize energy monitoring and efficiency when purchasing new devices. Among non-owners, 40% stated that energy efficiency would influence their decision to buy smart home technology in the future.

A spokesperson for Vivint emphasized the importance of energy management in smart home setups, stating, “It’s clear from the results that, alongside privacy and security, energy efficiency is a top priority among consumers when it comes to their smart home set-ups.”
