This software processed images from the camera to generate navigation data and maneuver commands, allowing the approaching Mira to autonomously close the distance to the target spacecraft. Instead, the mission demonstrated that off-the-shelf cameras could suffice for such operations.

Eric Romo, President and COO of Impulse Space, noted that the mission validated the maneuverability and precision of the Mira spacecraft, which employs high-thrust chemical propulsion. The successful close approach was achieved after the Mira spacecraft completed its primary tasks during the LEO Express 2 mission, launched in January 2025.

Implications for Future Missions

The success of the Remora mission opens up new opportunities for both companies in the realm of rendezvous and proximity operations (RPO). Starfish Space is developing a series of Otter spacecraft designed for various satellite servicing functions, including inspection and debris removal. The Remora mission serves as a proof of concept for the technology that will be utilized in these future missions.

Bennett stated, “This was a great proof point that we can take in signals from external sensors and guide Mira with them,” highlighting the potential for even closer approaches in future operations. Both companies expressed interest in pursuing further collaborations, with Impulse Space planning additional missions that could leverage the capabilities demonstrated in Remora.
