Republicans Face Urgent Health Care Challenge as ACA Subsidies Expire

As the expiration date for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies approaches on December 31, 2023, Republicans are confronted with a significant health care challenge. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is pushing a partisan health care package that notably excludes the extension of these subsidies. The urgency is heightened by a two-week recess beginning December 22, leaving little time for resolution.

Another bill, sponsored by Reps. Jen Kiggans (R-Va.) and Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.), proposes a one-year extension with fewer adjustments. Both petitions require significant Democratic support to succeed, as they need 218 signatures.
