Introduction to the ID.Polo EV
Volkswagen is set to launch the ID.Polo, the first of four new affordable electric vehicles (EVs), in Spring 2026. This model marks a significant step for the brand, as it is the first "ID" vehicle to carry an established Volkswagen name, building on the legacy of the popular Polo. Volkswagen's CEO, Thomas Schäfer, emphasized that the ID.Polo represents the beginning of a new generation for the company.
Key Specifications and Features
The ID.Polo will be available in four power outputs: 85 kW (114 hp), 99 kW (133 hp), 155 kW (208 hp), and a sporty GTI variant at 166 kW (223 hp). The entry-level versions will utilize a 37 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, while the higher-output models will be equipped with a 52 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery, offering a WLTP driving range of up to 450 km (280 miles). The vehicle will support DC charging speeds of up to 130 kW, with a charging time of approximately 23 minutes for the larger battery.
Volkswagen has also introduced a new PowerCo unified cell design that integrates cells directly into the battery pack, enhancing energy density by about 10% and reducing costs and space requirements. The ID.Polo will feature advanced driver assistance systems, including traffic light and stop sign recognition.
Interior and Design Enhancements
The ID.Polo maintains similar dimensions to its predecessor, measuring 4,053 mm in length, 1,816 mm in width, and 1,530 mm in height, but offers increased interior space and a larger luggage compartment of 435 liters, compared to 351 liters in the combustion version. The vehicle's design includes a digital cockpit with a 10.25-inch screen and a central 13-inch touchscreen for infotainment.

While Volkswagen's push into affordable EVs has been met with optimism, some critics express concerns regarding the production timeline and potential delays in the availability of the €25,000 base model. Initial offerings may focus on higher-priced variants, which could postpone the arrival of the more affordable options.
