On a seemingly ordinary morning, Espie Ayson opened her front door in Dunedin, New Zealand, only to find a sea lion lounging on her porch. The unexpected sight startled her, prompting a scream that alarmed her husband, Richard Ayson, and their daughters. Initially unaware of the situation, the family quickly learned that the cause of the commotion was the large sea lion, which had been spotted in the neighborhood previously. Richard noted, “It was two houses down the street last night, so it probably wasn't expected, but kind of almost was.”

As the family gathered to observe the sleeping sea lion, they noted the excitement it brought to the day, coinciding with daughter Sari's birthday. Anika Ayson mentioned that they spent time watching the sea lion, even noticing a pup moving inside her belly. The presence of the sea lion attracted attention from neighbors and passersby, with many stopping to take a look. Richard, a frequent surfer at St Clair Beach, expressed familiarity with the sea lion, stating, “I’ve probably had dealings with that one in the water a few times, I would guess, over the years.”

Richard remarked on the relaxed demeanor of the sea lion, indicating that it did not seem to be concerned about human presence. He conveyed a willingness to let the sea lion stay as long as it did not cause any issues, humorously adding, “as long as she goes somewhere else to go to the toilet, I'll be happy — but I bet she doesn't.”
