Caroline Merin, a former general manager for Uber Eats in Latin America and COO of Rappi, has identified significant inefficiencies in healthcare communication across the region. Many medical professionals rely heavily on WhatsApp for patient interactions, which can lead to overwhelming workloads. Merin noted, “A doctor who sees 20 patients during the day, gets home, has 100 messages and is expected to answer immediately and remember who the patient is without the health record in front of them.” This situation prompted her to launch Leona Health, an AI-driven solution designed to streamline communication for doctors.

Recently, Leona Health secured $14 million in seed funding, led by Andreessen Horowitz, with contributions from General Catalyst, Accel, and notable figures such as Kate Ryder, CEO of Maven Clinic, and David Vélez, CEO of Nubank. The startup's services are now available to doctors in 14 Latin American countries across 22 medical specialties. Leona Health allows patients to continue messaging their doctors via WhatsApp, while doctors manage these communications through a dedicated mobile app. The app prioritizes messages, suggests responses, and enables team members to assist in patient communication.
