Surge in Influenza Cases Prompts Health Ministry Recommendations in Israel

In response to a significant increase in influenza cases, Israel's Health Ministry has recommended that at-risk individuals, medical personnel, and visitors to geriatric facilities wear protective face masks. As of December 7, the ministry reported 513 new cases of Influenza A and one case of Influenza B across 14 hospitals. The current flu season has seen 633 children hospitalized, with 35 in intensive care, alongside approximately 900 hospitalized adults, 36 of whom are in intensive care. Notably, four children have died from the flu this month, three of whom were unvaccinated and had no underlying health conditions.

The Health Ministry is urging the public, particularly those aged 65 and older and individuals with chronic illnesses, to receive the flu vaccine. Vaccination rates have seen a notable increase, with over 1.5 million Israelis vaccinated, accounting for 15.7% of the population. However, this is a decrease from the 55% vaccination rate recorded three seasons ago (2022-2023).
