Loneliness Among UK University Students: A Growing Concern

12/17/2025, 12:46:39 PM

Prevalence of Loneliness in University Halls

A recent poll conducted by Opinium for PfP Students reveals that over two-thirds of students living in UK university halls experience feelings of loneliness or isolation. Specifically, 33% of students reported feeling lonely often, while 37% indicated they felt this way occasionally. The study highlights that 43% of students feel isolated in their living environments, and 44% struggle to make friends in these settings. The findings suggest that the type of accommodation chosen significantly impacts students' social experiences, with 87% acknowledging this influence.

Factors Contributing to Isolation

Students cited several reasons for their loneliness. A notable 45% reported difficulty in meeting people outside their flats, while 39% attributed their isolation to spending excessive time studying or working. Additionally, 26% mentioned that noise or the environment deterred them from socializing. Rachel Horrobin, a third-year psychology student, emphasized the role of technology in exacerbating these feelings. She noted that her reliance on her phone to connect with friends from home hindered her ability to forge new relationships at university.

Financial Pressures and Social Activities

Financial constraints also play a significant role in students' social lives. Many students reported that the cost of living and university fees limited their ability to engage in social activities. Rachel highlighted the stress of seeking employment to cover living expenses, which left little room for social outings. The poll indicated that 51% of respondents felt that the cost of their accommodation restricted their social interactions, while 41% believed that the design of their living spaces made it harder to connect with others.

Calls for Improved Support

In response to these findings, PfP Students launched the "Room to Belong" campaign, advocating for better support systems within university halls. The campaign calls for at least one staff member to be available 24/7 to provide assistance and foster connections among students. Eamonn Tierney, managing director of PfP Students, stated that the common perception of university life does not align with the reality many students face. He emphasized the responsibility of accommodation providers to help students integrate and thrive during this critical phase of their lives.

Criticism of Current Accommodations

Critics argue that the current state of university accommodations fails to address the social needs of students. The design and layout of many halls do not facilitate interaction, contributing to feelings of isolation. Furthermore, the financial burden of living expenses limits students' ability to participate in social activities, exacerbating their loneliness.
