Major Reconstruction Project at I-80 and Center Street Interchange in Joliet

Nearly all ramps at the I-80 and Center Street interchange will close for approximately three years, with the exception of the ramp from eastbound Meadow Avenue to eastbound I-80, which will remain open until a scheduled closure for repairs in fall 2027. Traffic will be redirected to U.S. 6, Larkin Avenue (Illinois 7), and Jefferson Street (U.S. 52) during this period. The anticipated reopening of the ramps is expected in late 2028.

The I-80 reconstruction project is projected to cost approximately $1.3 billion and aims to redesign and rebuild 16 miles of the interstate. This includes improvements to interchanges at I-55, Illinois 7, Center Street, Chicago Street, Richards Street, and Briggs Street, as well as the rehabilitation or replacement of over 30 bridges, including those spanning the Des Plaines River. The project is expected to be substantially complete by the end of 2028, with some landscaping and miscellaneous work extending into 2029.
