Fatal Police Shooting of Casey Barnes
On December 4, 2025, Casey Barnes, 32, was shot and killed by officers from the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) at the Hurstbourne Acres apartment complex. The incident occurred after police responded to reports that Barnes had pointed a gun at a woman and taken her dog. Body camera footage released by LMPD shows officers Michael Crowe and Austin Taylor ordering Barnes to drop his weapon as they approached him. When he did not comply, the officers fired their weapons, resulting in Barnes' death. LMPD Deputy Chief Ryan Bates stated that the officers acted decisively given the circumstances, emphasizing that the timing of the shooting was dictated by Barnes' actions. Following the incident, both officers were placed on administrative leave, and the Public Metro Integrity Unit is conducting an investigation.
Domestic Violence Incident Involving LMPD Investigator
In a separate incident, Tracy Carter, a 45-year-old investigator for the Office of Inspector General in Louisville, was arrested on December 13, 2025, after allegedly shooting her boyfriend during a domestic dispute. The altercation occurred outside her home in Fern Creek, where Carter reportedly fired three shots, hitting her boyfriend in the arm. He was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Carter has been suspended from her position, and her bond was set at $100,000. The case is under investigation by the LMPD's Domestic Violence Unit.
Homicide Arrests in Louisville
Additionally, LMPD has made arrests in connection with two separate homicides. On February 16, 2025, Michael Wehdah Sr. was shot and killed on Cedar Street. Brian Ramsey, along with Kristy Brumley and Anthony Trabue Sr., has been charged in connection with the incident. Ramsey faces charges of complicity to murder and robbery, while Trabue is charged with murder. The investigation remains ongoing.
In another case, William Baker, 35, was arrested on December 3, 2025, for the murder of a man found with multiple gunshot wounds in the Shelby Park neighborhood. Baker, who was initially detained on unrelated drug charges, is now facing charges of murder and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.
Community Response and Ongoing Investigations
The recent surge in gun violence has prompted calls for justice from victims' families. Aumani Martin, a 22-year-old who was shot and killed after leaving a Halloween party, has had his family publicly pleading for information regarding his death. They emphasize the need for community support in addressing violence. LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey noted that while homicides in Louisville have decreased this year, the emotional toll on families remains significant.
As investigations continue into these incidents, the LMPD is urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in resolving these cases.
