Emotional Journey of Chloe Lucas

Chloe Lucas, a 39-year-old nurse from Essex, has found solace and joy in raising a small herd of Highland cows, which she brought to Wickford as a means to improve her mental health following the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. Recently, Lucas experienced a moment of overwhelming happiness when she learned that her cows had become pregnant after spending four months with a bull. "When I was told they were in calf I just felt so content I started crying. I couldn't believe it, I was so happy," she expressed.

The Role of Cows in Mental Health Recovery

Lucas's journey into farming began as a therapeutic escape from her demanding job at Basildon Hospital, where she faced significant emotional strain during the pandemic. After suffering a nervous breakdown due to the trauma of her work environment, she sought comfort in caring for animals. "It was just horrendous, nobody survived on the ward I was on," she recalled, noting the profound impact this experience had on her mental well-being. The presence of her cows has provided her with a sense of calm and purpose, helping her navigate her recovery.

Community Engagement and Family Involvement

The Highland cows, named Isla, Catriona, Beatrix, Dally, and Murphy, have not only brought joy to Lucas but have also fostered community engagement. The cows reside at The Hoppy Acre rabbit sanctuary and have been allowed to graze at various locations in Billericay and Southend-on-Sea. Lucas noted that visitors enjoy interacting with the cows, with one couple even getting engaged in front of them. "It's been so positive, people have been and they want to come back again. I feel like we've created our own community," she stated.

A New Passion for Farming

Inspired by agricultural shows such as "Clarkson's Farm" and "Countryfile," Lucas began volunteering on farms across Essex, Norfolk, Kent, and Devon, where she learned essential farming skills, including driving tractors and assisting with lambing and calving. This newfound passion has transformed into a family affair, with relatives joining her in caring for the cows. "My cows mean the absolute world to me. They are my pride and joy," Lucas affirmed.

Conclusion

Chloe Lucas's story illustrates the profound impact that animals can have on mental health and community building. Through her dedication to her Highland cows, she has not only found personal healing but has also created a welcoming environment for others to enjoy.
