European Commission Transfers Thermal Power Plant to Ukraine

The European Commission has successfully relocated a complete thermal power plant from Lithuania to Ukraine, marking its largest coordinated logistical operation to date. This transfer aims to restore critical energy capacity and bolster Ukraine's national grid, which has been severely impacted by ongoing Russian attacks on its infrastructure. The operation, which spanned 11 months, involved 149 shipments totaling 2,399 tonnes of equipment, including 40 oversized shipments of heavy transformers and stators weighing approximately 172 tonnes each. The Polish Governmental Agency for Strategic Reserves played a crucial role in facilitating the transport of these components.

This operation is part of the European Union's broader response to Russia's aggression against Ukraine since February 2022, coordinated through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM). To date, EU support has reached an estimated 9 million people in Ukraine, providing 9,500 power generators and 7,200 transformers. The European Commission has allocated over €1.2 billion for humanitarian aid programs in Ukraine, delivering more than 160,000 tonnes of aid. All 27 EU member states, along with six participating states—Norway, Türkiye, North Macedonia, Iceland, Serbia, and Moldova—have contributed in-kind assistance through the UCPM.

Hadja Lahbib, the Commissioner for Preparedness and Crisis Management, emphasized the significance of the operation, stating, “The delivery of this power plant is European solidarity in action, and our most demanding logistical operation to date.” She expressed gratitude to Lithuania, Poland, Romania, and all partners involved, highlighting the operation as a demonstration of the EU’s commitment to supporting Ukraine as it faces a fourth winter of conflict.
