Anticipated Surge in Travelers
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is preparing for a significant increase in passenger volume during the upcoming holiday travel season, projecting to screen approximately 44.3 million travelers at airport security checkpoints from December 19, 2025, to January 4, 2026. The peak day is expected to be December 28, with around 2.86 million travelers anticipated, closely followed by December 19, 20, 21, 27, and 29. Last year, the busiest day was December 27, when TSA screened nearly 2.85 million travelers.
Enhancements to Traveler Experience
In anticipation of this record-setting travel period, TSA has implemented several improvements aimed at enhancing the airport security experience. These include the enforcement of the REAL ID Act, which began on May 7, 2025, and the introduction of a modernized identity verification system called TSA ConfirmID, set to launch on February 1, 2026. This system allows travelers without acceptable identification to verify their identity online for a fee of $45.
Additionally, TSA has introduced expedited screening lanes for military personnel and their families, as well as a new policy permitting passengers to keep their shoes on during security checks. The "Families on the Fly" campaign has also been initiated to improve the experience for families traveling with children, featuring dedicated family lanes at select airports.

Brian Bushnell, TSA's Acting Federal Security Director for Upstate New York, noted the common issue of travelers inadvertently carrying prohibited items, which can delay the security process. He urged travelers to ensure their bags are free of such items to expedite their journey through checkpoints.
