He stated, “No one can guarantee that the shelter facility will remain standing after that. That is the main threat.”

The New Safe Confinement (NSC), which serves as the outer protective shell for the reactor, was severely impacted by a Russian drone strike in February 2023. This incident resulted in a major fire that compromised the outer cladding of the structure. Tarakanov noted that the NSC has lost several of its primary safety functions and warned that full restoration could take three to four years. Currently, while radiation levels at the facility remain stable and within normal limits, there are still 300 smaller holes that need to be addressed, which were created by firefighters during the response to the fire.
