Tesla Faces Declining Sales Amidst Rising Competition in European Auto Market

12/24/2025, 6:09:38 AM

Overview of the Current Market Landscape

In November 2025, new car sales in Europe experienced a year-on-year increase for the fifth consecutive month, driven significantly by the rise in electric vehicle (EV) registrations. According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), total car sales in the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the European Free Trade Association rose by 2.4% to 1.1 million vehicles. Notably, battery electric vehicles accounted for a substantial market share, reaching 21% in the EU, 26% in the UK, and an impressive 98% in Norway.

Tesla's Sales Decline

Despite the overall growth in the European auto market, Tesla's sales have been on a downward trajectory. The company reported a 34% decrease in new car registrations in November, selling only 12,130 vehicles compared to 18,430 in the same month the previous year. This decline reduced Tesla's market share from 2.1% to 1.4%. In contrast, Chinese automaker BYD saw its registrations nearly triple year-on-year, reaching 42,500 units, while SAIC, the owner of the MG brand, reported a 26% increase in sales.

Factors Influencing the Market

The European auto industry is currently grappling with several challenges, including competition from Chinese manufacturers, U.S. import tariffs, and the complexities of meeting domestic regulations for EV adoption. Recently, the European Commission announced a plan to abandon a previously effective ban on combustion engine cars set for 2035, a significant retreat from the EU's green policies. This decision came after intense lobbying from European carmakers, who are pushing for more favorable sales targets for hybrid vehicles, which accounted for 44% of all sales in November.

Criticism and Opposition

Critics argue that Tesla's struggles are compounded by Elon Musk's political engagements, which may have alienated some European consumers. Musk's involvement with far-right political groups in Germany and the UK, along with his fallout with former U.S. President Donald Trump over electric vehicle subsidies, has drawn scrutiny. Analysts suggest that these factors could be contributing to the decline in Tesla's sales, despite the company's significant market valuation, which exceeds $1.5 trillion.

Official Statements & Responses

The ACEA noted that while there is positive momentum in the market, overall sales volumes remain below pre-pandemic levels. They highlighted that battery electric, hybrid electric, and plug-in hybrid vehicles collectively accounted for 65.6% of registrations in November, up from 56% in August 2024.

What's Next for Tesla and the European Market

Looking ahead, the European auto market is expected to continue evolving, with a growing emphasis on hybrid vehicles as manufacturers adapt to regulatory changes. Tesla's future in Europe may hinge on its ability to respond to increasing competition from both established and emerging players in the EV sector.
