A recent study conducted by researchers at Cornell University has revealed significant insights into how natural environments can reverse anxiety in laboratory mice. The research involved releasing lab mice, which typically live in confined spaces, into large, enclosed outdoor fields. This "rewilding" process allowed the mice to experience grass, dirt, and various natural stimuli for the first time, leading to remarkable behavioral changes. After just one week in the field, even mice with established anxiety showed reduced fear responses when tested in a classic anxiety assessment tool known as the elevated plus maze.
Methodology and Findings
The study involved multiple cohorts of lab mice over two years, with half of the mice being rewilded while the others remained in standard lab conditions. The elevated plus maze consists of both enclosed and open arms, allowing researchers to measure anxiety based on the time spent in each area. Typically, lab mice exhibit increased anxiety over repeated exposures to the maze, spending less time in the open arms. However, the rewilded mice displayed either no fear response or a significantly diminished one, indicating that their time in a naturalistic environment effectively reset their anxiety levels.
Matthew Zipple, the study's lead author, noted, “We put them in the field for a week, and they returned to their original levels of anxiety behavior.” This finding suggests that living in a more varied environment can block the formation of initial fear responses and reset those already developed.
The Role of Agency in Anxiety
Central to the researchers' conclusions is the concept of "agency," which refers to the ability of an animal to make choices and influence its environment. In a lab setting, mice experience learned helplessness due to their lack of control over their surroundings. Conversely, the rewilded mice engaged in problem-solving behaviors, such as burrowing and navigating obstacles, which contributed to their improved mental health. “If you experience lots of different things that happen to you every day, you have a better way to calibrate whether or not something is scary or threatening,” explained neurobiologist Michael Sheehan.
Implications for Understanding Anxiety
The implications of this study extend beyond rodent research. The findings suggest that anxiety may not be solely a biological predisposition but could also be influenced by environmental factors and the breadth of experiences. Sheehan pointed out that the rising rates of anxiety in children and young adults may correlate with a decline in unstructured play and exposure to varied experiences. “One of the things that could be causing a rise in anxiety in young people is that they’re living more sheltered lives,” he remarked.
Future Research Directions
The study opens avenues for further investigation into how environmental factors can shape anxiety responses. Questions remain regarding the duration of exposure needed to achieve lasting effects and whether age influences the outcomes. While the research does not directly address human anxiety, it raises important considerations about the role of experience in emotional health.
