China's Historical Ties with Kenya: Celebrating Zheng He's Legacy

In the early 15th century, Chinese admiral Zheng He embarked on seven significant maritime expeditions, commanding a fleet of over 20,000 sailors. His voyages, which predated those of Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama by approximately 80 years, reached various regions, including Southeast Asia, South Asia, West Asia, and the eastern coast of Africa. Despite these monumental achievements, Zheng He is notably absent from Kenya's educational curriculum, prompting efforts to raise awareness of his contributions and the historical links between China and Kenya.

In a bid to strengthen cultural ties and recognition of these historical links, the Chinese government has increased funding for archaeological projects, DNA research, and exhibitions in Kenya. A recent exhibition at the National Museums of Kenya in Nairobi commemorates both the 620th anniversary of Zheng He’s voyages and the 62 years of diplomatic relations between China and Kenya. This initiative aligns with China's broader Belt and Road Initiative, which seeks to connect historical trade routes with modern infrastructure projects, such as Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway and Lamu Port.
