Cardiac Arrest at Liverpool Festival: A Drummer's Miraculous Recovery

Lionel Duke, the drummer of a Liverpool band, experienced a cardiac arrest while performing at the On The Waterfront festival at Liverpool's Pier Head in June. The incident occurred shortly after the band began their set, just two songs into their performance. Medics, including members of the Merseyside Water Rescue charity, quickly rushed to the stage to provide assistance. Duke was subsequently placed in an induced coma and spent eight days in intensive care at Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital.

Reflecting on the incident, the 58-year-old Duke expressed his gratitude for surviving the ordeal. He stated, "Everyone thought I was going to die. I'm still in shock about what happened but I feel blessed I'm still here." He recounted the moments leading up to his collapse, noting that there were no warning signs prior to the event. Duke described the experience as surreal, saying, "I still get emotional thinking about what happened. It's a lot to take in."

Duke received immediate medical attention on stage, where CPR was administered for approximately 12 minutes. An off-duty nurse present at the festival indicated that his chances of survival were slim at that moment. Duke remarked on the critical timing of the medical response, stating, "Fortunately for me, I was in the right place at the right time."

In a show of support following Duke's recovery, former The Police frontman Sting invited the band to perform at London's Hammersmith Apollo on October 28. Duke described the emotional moment when he met Sting backstage, recalling, "He gave me a hug." This gesture highlights the solidarity within the music community and the impact of Duke's recovery on his fellow musicians.

Now back on his feet, Duke has expressed a renewed appreciation for life. He shared, "I wake up in the morning and think it is so nice to wake up." Despite occasional flashbacks to the incident, he remains grateful for the second chance he has been given. His experience serves as a reminder of the importance of quick medical intervention and the support of the community in times of crisis.
