On December 31, the U.S. military targeted a convoy of alleged drug-trafficking boats in international waters, killed three "narco-terrorists," and survivors jumped overboard as two additional vessels were sunk.
U.S. Southern Command (Southcom) stated the boats were linked to a designated terrorist organization and had been transferring narcotics.
Since September, U.S. strikes have totaled 33, resulting in at least 110 deaths among alleged traffickers.
The strikes coincide with increased U.S. pressure on Nicolás Maduro (President of Venezuela) after a CIA drone strike on a drug storage facility in Venezuela.
