Ukrainians Endure Power Cuts Amid Ongoing Russian Attacks

In the wake of recent Russian air attacks, many Ukrainians are facing prolonged power outages, particularly in areas surrounding Kyiv. Olena Pazhydaieva, a resident of Vyshhorod, has been without power or heat for three days as temperatures drop to -3°C (27°F). To cope, she and her six-year-old son have taken refuge in a local shelter, which has been designated as an "islet of warmth and power." This facility, along with others established by authorities, provides heating and electricity for residents to charge their devices and maintain connectivity.

The latest wave of attacks has severely impacted energy infrastructure, with the Ukrainian Energy Ministry reporting that approximately 19,000 customers in the Kyiv region lost power. These strikes are part of a broader strategy by Russia to target energy facilities across Ukraine, leading to widespread blackouts and forcing families to adapt to challenging living conditions.

The shelters, referred to as "resilience points," have become essential for many families. They serve as communal spaces where individuals can gather to stay warm and connected. Pazhydaieva noted that about 20 people often crowd into the small shelter, utilizing the available internet to continue working remotely. Despite the difficult circumstances, she expressed gratitude for the resources available at the shelter, stating, "It's good that there's internet. We can work. I’m not the only person here, there are many people."

However, the situation remains precarious. Families are forced to find creative solutions to maintain their daily routines. Pazhydaieva mentioned her efforts to connect a water heater at home to a portable power station to provide warmth for her family. The ongoing conflict has left many residents feeling helpless and uncertain about the future.

Pazhydaieva also voiced skepticism regarding international diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict, particularly criticizing remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump. During a recent meeting, Trump suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin "wants Ukraine to succeed," a statement Pazhydaieva found contradictory given the ongoing missile attacks. She remarked, "When Trump says that Putin wants prosperity for Ukraine as missiles are flying at us, somehow these two statements don't really match up."

As Ukrainians continue to endure the hardships brought on by the conflict, they remain resilient in their efforts to adapt. "We're doing the best we can here where we are now," Pazhydaieva concluded, reflecting the determination of many to persevere despite the challenges they face. The situation underscores the ongoing impact of the war on daily life in Ukraine and the critical need for sustained support from the international community.
