Conversely, women with PTSD did not exhibit the same lipid deficits; instead, their endocannabinoid levels were comparable to those of healthy women, with some markers even elevated. This suggests that women's PTSD is more closely associated with chronic immune activation rather than lipid deficiency.
The study also examined a subgroup of patients suffering from both PTSD and major depressive disorder. The gender-specific patterns persisted, with men showing low endocannabinoid levels and women exhibiting high inflammatory responses.

Previous clinical trials aimed at increasing endocannabinoid levels have largely failed, particularly among female participants.
