Romanian Villagers Face Daily Threats from Russian Drone Strikes

In the village of Plauru, located at the edge of Romania’s Danube delta near the Ukrainian border, residents live under the constant threat of Russian drone strikes. The village, part of the Ceatalchioi commune, is home to approximately 500 people who experience the war in Ukraine as a daily reality. The proximity to the Ukrainian port city of Izmail, just 300 meters across the river, places them on the frontline of a conflict in which they are not actively participating. Mayor Tudor Cernega emphasized the dire situation, stating, “We are on the hotline. Practically, we are part of the war too.”

Since the onset of the war in 2022, the frequency of drone-related incidents has increased significantly. Villagers report that drone fragments have fallen in nearby fields, and while there have been no fatalities, the psychological toll is evident. Marius Morozov, an employee at the Ceatalchioi town hall, noted that the number of explosions has surged from five to seven per evening to over 50 on some nights. This escalation has led to evacuations, particularly after a Russian drone struck a Ukrainian ship in November 2025, prompting local authorities to transport residents to Tulcea for safety.

Adriana Giuvanovici, 71, stated, “We hear loud noises and bombs every now and again... but of course we are afraid.” Similarly, Alexandru Nedelcu, 70, remarked, “At our age, where would we go?” This sentiment reflects a broader struggle among older residents who feel disconnected from urban life.

Mayor Cernega highlighted the commune's inadequate road conditions, which hinder evacuation efforts and contribute to a sense of neglect. The Romanian government has recently amended legislation to allow military engagement with unauthorized drones, yet the army has refrained from acting, wary of escalating tensions with Ukraine. President Nicusor Dan explained that operational constraints, rather than fear, guide this cautious approach.
