Story summary
- On January 1, 1801, Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi discovered the dwarf planet Ceres at the Palermo Astronomical Observatory. Initially classified as a planet, Ceres is now recognized as the largest dwarf planet in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It is named after the Roman goddess of agriculture and fertility.
