Israeli and Palestinian Mothers Unite for Peace Amidst Conflict

In October 2023, approximately 1,500 Israeli and Palestinian women convened on the shores of the Dead Sea for a peace rally organized by the Israeli movement Women Wage Peace and the Palestinian group Women of the Sun. Among the key figures were Yael Admi, an Israeli mother of six, and Reem al-Hajajreh, a Palestinian mother of four. The event aimed to advocate for an end to the ongoing violence that has plagued the region. However, just three days later, Hamas launched a deadly attack on southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 people, followed by a severe military response from Israel that led to over 70,000 fatalities, predominantly among women and children in Gaza. This escalation of violence overshadowed the rally's hopeful message, leaving both Admi and al-Hajajreh grappling with the profound impact of the renewed conflict.

Despite the turmoil, al-Hajajreh made a challenging journey to The Hague for a conference on Human Rights Day in December 2023, taking over 30 hours and navigating multiple checkpoints. She emphasized the importance of her presence, stating, “Despite the hardship, I felt strongly that attending the conference was essential, but not only for me but for the women whose voices I carry with me.” Both women have experienced personal losses, including the murder of Vivian Silver, a prominent peace activist, which has further fueled their commitment to peace.

Admi and al-Hajajreh are determined to advocate for the inclusion of women in peace negotiations, highlighting that women represent more than half of society and often oppose war. Al-Hajajreh remarked, “Talking about peace in the middle of war was not easy, but we stood our ground... We want to watch our children grow up and have a bright future.” Their shared experiences of loss and the desire to protect their children have forged a strong partnership, despite facing criticism for their collaboration.
