Lake Mead National Recreation Area Initiates Road Improvement Project

The National Park Service (NPS) is set to commence a significant road improvement project at Lake Mead National Recreation Area on January 5, 2026. This initiative involves repaving a 3.7-mile stretch of Willow Beach Road, which connects the Willow Beach entrance station to the nonmotorized boat launch area. The project is expected to conclude by mid-March 2026.

The $2 million project aims to address deteriorating road conditions characterized by cracks, potholes, and flood damage. Funding for the project is sourced entirely from visitor entrance fees, reflecting the NPS's commitment to enhancing the visitor experience at one of the park's most popular destinations. Superintendent Mike Gauthier stated, “This project reflects our commitment to reinvesting entrance fees back into the visitor experience. Improving Willow Beach Road will make travel safer and more comfortable while supporting continued access to this remarkable area of the park.”

Construction will occur from Mondays to Thursdays, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., with no work scheduled on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays. During certain phases, traffic will be reduced to one lane, potentially causing delays of up to 15 minutes. Both uphill and downhill lanes will remain open on weekends. The existing asphalt will be ground down and repurposed as a base layer, topped with three inches of new asphalt to enhance durability. Prior to final paving, the roadway will be finished with hardpacked gravel, suitable for all passenger vehicles and trucks with trailers.

Throughout the construction period, Willow Beach, the marina, and the fish hatchery will remain open 24 hours a day. The NPS encourages visitors to plan ahead, allow extra travel time on weekdays, and exercise caution in work zones. Park staff have expressed appreciation for the public’s patience during the construction process.
