South Bend Celebrates Justice

South Bend, Indiana, will observe the 40th Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 19, 2026, with a breakfast, educational workshops, and a march to emphasize collaboration for freedom and economic justice, along with community service awards.
Timothy Lake will deliver the keynote at the South Bend breakfast.

Newton Honors King

Newton High School in Covington, Georgia will host the 41st annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday observance.
The event begins at 3 p.m. on January 18, 2026.
The event will include acceptance of nominations for the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Awards.
MLK community awards honor Newton County individuals and organizations who embody King's principles of service, justice, and unity.
Nominations are currently open and will close in early January.

King's Legacy Celebrated

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed on the third Monday of January to honor his legacy of equality and justice.
After King's assassination in 1968, Rep. John Conyers proposed legislation for the holiday, which Congress passed in 1983, signed by President Ronald Reagan.
Many states delayed recognition, but activism, including protests led by Dr. Warren H. Stewart, resulted in Arizona reinstating the holiday in 1992.
Today, MLK Day serves as a National Day of Service, inspiring community projects across the country, with events planned in Connecticut.
