Discovery of Two New Coral Species in Hong Kong's Southeastern Waters

Researchers from Baptist University have announced the discovery of two new coral species in Hong Kong’s southeastern waters, highlighting the region's rich marine biodiversity. The findings were made in rocky reefs off Sung Kong Island, approximately five kilometers southeast of Shek O Beach. The announcement was made on a Monday, emphasizing the significance of these discoveries in an area close to urban development.

The two newly identified soft coral species are Paraminabea inflata and Parasphaerasclera dimorpha. Paraminabea inflata, characterized by its yellow or orange coloration, marks the third species of its kind found in Hong Kong. This species has also been discovered near Zhuhai’s Heizhou Island, located about 17 kilometers south of Lantau Island. In contrast, Parasphaerasclera dimorpha, which exhibits a bright orange-red hue, is unique to Hong Kong and is the first of its kind reported along the coast of China.

Qiu Jianwen, a professor in the Department of Biology at Baptist University and the leader of the research team, noted the importance of these discoveries in showcasing the high level of coral diversity in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. He stated, “There are only 11 species under the Paraminabea genus in the world and we already have three in Hong Kong.” This statement underscores the ecological significance of the region, which is often overshadowed by its urban landscape.
