Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon confirmed the death of a 60-year-old woman from Springfield, Illinois, who was the sole occupant in a vehicle crash on Wabash Avenue and was pronounced dead at the scene.
In Tokyo, seven individuals aged 80 to 96 were hospitalized for choking on mochi, including an elderly woman who died after choking on daifuku.
From 2020 to 2024, there were 338 hospitalizations and 33 fatalities due to mochi-related choking incidents, prompting authorities to recommend cutting mochi into small pieces and chewing thoroughly.
