Samantha Kattan Seeks Assembly Seat in Queens

Samantha Kattan, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and a tenant organizer, has officially filed to run for the Assembly District 37 seat in western Queens. This vacancy arises as the current Assembly Member, Claire Valdez, prepares to run for Congress, specifically for the open House seat in New York's 7th Congressional District following Rep. Nydia Velázquez’s planned retirement. Kattan aims to ensure continued representation for the working-class communities of Long Island City, Sunnyside, Woodside, Maspeth, and Ridgewood.

Kattan has been an active member of the DSA since 2017 and has played a significant role in the organization’s electoral strategies. She previously contributed to the successful campaign of fellow tenant activist Phara Souffrant Forrest in Brooklyn in 2019. Currently, Kattan serves as the director of contracts at the Urban Homesteading Assistance Board, a nonprofit focused on helping tenants establish housing cooperatives. Living in Ridgewood for over five years, Kattan emphasizes her commitment to the community, stating, “As a tenant organizer, socialist and mother, I would be ready on Day 1 to fight for my community.”
