Bridging Divides Through Music: The Jerusalem Youth Chorus

The Jerusalem Youth Chorus (JYC), founded in 2012 by Micah Hendler, aims to bridge the cultural and political divides between youth in East and West Jerusalem through music and dialogue. This initiative emerges from Hendler's personal journey of understanding the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and his belief in music as a powerful tool for fostering community and shared identity.

His co-leader, Amer Abu Arqub, a former JYC member, now serves as the executive director. And instead, we decided to sing for peace, justice, inclusion, and equality.” Hendler echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the necessity of a common goal in peace-building efforts. He remarked, “If you think about any of the research that’s been done on intergroup conflict, you need a common goal.”

Despite the chorus's successes, challenges persist. Some parents have expressed concerns about their children's involvement due to political or religious reasons. However, many families have rallied to support the chorus, recognizing its importance for their children's development and the broader community.
