Hong Kong Metropolitan University’s Ascension
Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) is set to become Hong Kong’s first university of applied sciences (UAS) in 2024, marking a significant milestone in its evolution since its founding by the government in 1989. The university aims to enhance collaboration with similar institutions to advance vocational and professional education across the Greater Bay Area. As the only self-financed university in Hong Kong with self-accrediting status, HKMU is positioned to adapt swiftly to market trends and educational needs. Notable Achievements in Global Rankings
HKMU recently made its debut in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2026, securing a position in the 781–790 range. This achievement highlights HKMU as the first self-financing university and UAS in Hong Kong to be recognized in these prestigious rankings, which assess institutions based on academic reputation, research impact, and graduate employability. Additionally, HKMU advanced over 140 places in the QS Asia University Rankings 2026, now ranking 393rd among Asia’s top universities.
Research and Innovation Growth
The university has also seen growth in research funding and the number of patents filed, reflecting its commitment to innovation. Notably, HKMU achieved its first intellectual property licensing agreement for a non-invasive prostate cancer screening technology, which is set to benefit patients through commercialization.
Honorary Doctorates Awarded
During its 37th Congregation, HKMU awarded qualifications to 4,800 graduates and conferred honorary doctorates upon four distinguished individuals:
Professor Sylvia Fung Yuk-kuen
A pioneering figure in nursing, Professor Fung has over 50 years of experience and has significantly advanced the profession in Hong Kong. She served as Chief Nurse of the Hospital Authority and was recognized with the Florence Nightingale Medal for her leadership during the 2003 SARS epidemic.
Dr. Ina Ho Chan Un-chan
A successful businesswoman, Dr. Chan has contributed to education, social welfare, and the arts. She established the Ina Ho Cantonese Opera Research Centre at HKMU to promote education in this traditional art form and served as Honorary Vice-President of The Hong Kong Anti-Cancer Society.
Mr. Benedict Sin Nga-yan
Mr. Sin is a veteran in the fine jewellery industry and has been instrumental in preserving local craftsmanship. He actively supports youth empowerment and serves as an advisor to HKMU’s Bachelor of Applied Science in Gemmology and Jewellery Studies program.
Professor Xu Bing
An internationally acclaimed artist, Professor Xu is known for his innovative blend of traditional Chinese culture with contemporary elements. He has exhibited globally and was appointed Hong Kong’s Ambassador for Cultural Promotion in 2024.
