New Dr. Seuss Book Set for Release in 2026

A new Dr. Seuss book titled *Sing the 50 United States!* is scheduled for release on June 2, 2026, coinciding with the celebration of America's 250th anniversary. This announcement was made by Dr. Seuss Enterprises and Random House Children’s Books, which will publish the book. The first printing will consist of 500,000 copies. The book features the iconic Cat in the Hat character and aims to help readers learn the names of all 50 states, accompanied by a map of the United States beneath the book jacket.

The impetus for this release stems from the discovery of an original manuscript and cover sketch in the archives of the University of California, San Diego’s Geisel Library. Susan Brandt, president and CEO of Dr. Seuss Enterprises, described the find as “a time capsule of [Geisel’s] imagination.” The book will include illustrations from Geisel’s original manuscript, as well as contributions from children’s book artist Tom Brannon.

*Sing the 50 United States!* is not the first posthumous Dr. Seuss title. In 2015, *What Pet Should I Get?*, believed to have been written between 1958 and 1962, was published. Additionally, *Dr. Seuss’s Horse Museum* was released in 2019, based on another original manuscript found in Geisel’s home. Despite the excitement surrounding the new title, some experts express skepticism regarding its authenticity as a long-lost original work. Philip Nel, a children’s literature scholar, suggested that it resembles material intended for the *Cat in the Hat Songbook*.

Dr. Seuss's legacy is not without controversy. In 2021, Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced the cessation of publication for six titles that were criticized for their depictions of Asian, African, and other characters. This decision sparked debate, with some praising the move as necessary for modern sensibilities, while others lamented the loss of classic works. Ann Neely, a retired children’s literature scholar, stated, “We have so many outstanding books for children today; there is no need to continue to publish books that are now inappropriate.”

In light of the upcoming release, Dr. Seuss Enterprises aims to provide educational resources alongside the book. Students across the country will receive a backpack filled with Dr. Seuss titles and essential school supplies, in collaboration with First Book, a nonprofit focused on providing books to children in low-income communities.
