Newport Beach Film Festival Honors Celebrates Emerging Talent and Industry Icons

The 26th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival Honors, featuring Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch, aired on PBS SoCal on Monday at 7:30 PM. The event, recorded at the Balboa Bay Resort in October, celebrated emerging talent and industry icons, including the presentation of the Legends and Groundbreakers Award to Scarlett Johansson. The festival, executive produced by Visit Newport Beach, also included speeches and interviews with honorees such as Mark Hamill, Noah Schnapp, and Diane Lane.

Among this year's honorees, Chase Infiniti, recognized for her role in “One Battle After Another,” expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn from established figures in the industry. She described the experience as life-changing, stating, “Just getting the opportunity to be in a room with Paul Thomas Anderson, Leonardo DiCaprio... it’s insane to think.” Similarly, Miles Caton, a breakout star from “Sinners,” reflected on his unexpected success in acting, noting the warm response to his film debut.

The festival also honored notable figures in the film industry. Brendan Fraser received the Icon Award, while Diane Lane and Mark Hamill were also recognized for their contributions. Hamill shared his thoughts on his career trajectory, admitting, “A few years ago, I reached a plateau... I didn’t say I’m retired, and I always thought, ‘Well, I’ll do voiceover,’ but I don’t care about being on camera anymore.” This sentiment highlights the evolving nature of an actor's career.

The event acknowledged past alumni from the 10 Actors to Watch lists, with Tessa Thompson (class of 2015) receiving the Outstanding Achievement in Acting Award and Jenny Slate (class of 2014) honored with the Artist of Distinction Award. Kerry Condon (class of 2022) was presented with a similar award by producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who emphasized the significance of Condon's journey, stating, “25 years later here I am. So my whole career has literally been a dream come true.”

Steven Gaydos, a former Variety editor who received the Arts Champion Award, humorously acknowledged his past aspirations, saying, “I could have been Luke Skywalker,” in reference to his audition for the iconic role. Scarlett Johansson, upon receiving the Legends and Groundbreakers Award, remarked, “I think it means creating a path that wasn’t there before... I can only hope to pay it forward.”
