Grave Robber Arrested in Pennsylvania Cemetery Desecration

Jonathan Gerlach, a 34-year-old resident of Ephrata, Pennsylvania, has been arrested in connection with a series of grave robberies at Mount Moriah Cemetery, a historic burial ground spanning Philadelphia and Delaware counties. Authorities allege that Gerlach burglarized and desecrated at least 26 mausoleums and underground vaults, stealing over 100 human skeletons. His arrest followed a months-long investigation initiated by the Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the site.

The investigation began after cemetery preservationists reported widespread grave desecration to local police. Surveillance conducted by detectives led to Gerlach's arrest on January 6, when he was observed leaving the cemetery with a burlap bag and a crowbar. Upon searching his vehicle, officers found numerous bones and skulls in plain view. Following his arrest, investigators searched Gerlach's home and a storage unit, uncovering more than 100 human skulls, long bones, mummified hands and feet, and two decomposing torsos.
