Displacement Crisis in Northwestern Nigeria Due to Gang Violence

In January 2026, thousands of residents in the Tidibale community of northwestern Nigeria were forced to flee their homes following a direct threat from Bello Turji, a notorious gang leader. This mass displacement was triggered by Turji's retaliation against the community for allegedly tipping off security forces about his gang's activities, which resulted in a military operation that killed one of his men. Turji's warning to the residents was stark: "He told them if anyone remains when he returns, they will be killed.
