CedarBridge Academy in Bermuda is pioneering the integration of augmented reality (AR) into its educational framework, led by Kimberley Tucker, the school's science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teacher and head of the extended reality (XR) program. This initiative aims to prepare students for future workplace demands by enhancing their learning experiences through interactive technology. On January 5, 2023, Tucker conducted a professional development workshop for primary and middle school social studies teachers, emphasizing the potential of AR to engage students more effectively than traditional methods.

AR Implementation and Student Engagement

The AR program at CedarBridge Academy utilizes the free software app Artivive, allowing students to create unique "trigger images" that link to their AR content. This approach is designed to make learning more dynamic and hands-on, moving away from static educational methods. Tucker noted, “Studies have found that using technology in classrooms gets students more engaged and is more hands-on.” The initiative not only focuses on academic skills but also on practical skills such as video editing, collaboration, and audience identification.

Upcoming Public Showcases

The fruits of this innovative educational approach will be showcased at the Bermuda Day Parade in May 2023, where students will present their AR projects on an interactive float. Additionally, CedarBridge Academy plans to host an AR showcase in April to display student creations to the wider community. Tucker highlighted that the parade will feature various schools, with students demonstrating their AR projects using iPads to engage spectators.

Diverse Student Projects

Students at CedarBridge Academy have already begun to produce a variety of AR projects. For instance, a former student created a public service announcement about the dangers of drink-driving using AR technology. Other projects include a “day in the life of” AR experience and a science project that utilized VR to explore different environmental regions. Tucker emphasized the potential for creating AR content that reflects Bermuda's unique history and culture.

Future Aspirations for AR in Education

Tucker envisions a future where all students in Bermuda can utilize AR technology as part of their curriculum. Currently, around 25 to 30 students are involved in the program, with plans to expand participation to the entire student body. While there is no separate certification for AR yet, the work contributes to students' grades in their existing classes. Tucker stated, “If it works out, the goal then is to have all students in Bermuda using it and, as they get more comfortable with the technology, incorporating it into the curriculum.”
