Ghana's Major Crackdown on Cybercrime: 53 Nigerians Arrested

In a significant intelligence-led operation, Ghanaian authorities arrested 53 Nigerian nationals suspected of involvement in extensive cybercriminal activities across the Greater Accra Region. The operation, conducted on January 16 and 17, 2026, targeted multiple locations identified as cybercrime hubs, including East Legon Hills, Afienya, Kwabenya, Weija, and Tuba. The raids were coordinated by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) in collaboration with the National Security Operations, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), and the Ghana Police Service SWAT Unit.

The operation resulted in the apprehension of nine key suspects believed to be orchestrating the cybercrime activities, while 44 others were rescued from exploitation. These individuals were reportedly coerced into participating in various cyber fraud schemes, including romance scams and business email compromises. Authorities seized a substantial amount of equipment during the raids, including 62 laptops, 52 mobile phones, and two pump-action guns, indicating a well-organized criminal network.

Among those detained, 44 individuals are believed to be victims of human trafficking, highlighting the intersection between cybercrime and human rights abuses. These victims were often lured to Ghana under false pretenses of lucrative job opportunities, only to find themselves trapped in exploitative conditions.

Ghana's Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, emphasized the importance of protecting the country's cyber image internationally. He stated, “Protecting Ghana’s cyber image internationally is non-negotiable,” and urged foreign nationals to verify claims made by individuals inviting them to Ghana. He also noted that previous suspects arrested in similar operations have been handed over to Nigerian law enforcement through INTERPOL.

While the operation has been largely praised for its proactive approach to combating cybercrime, some critics argue that the focus on foreign nationals may overlook domestic issues related to cybercrime in Ghana. Concerns have been raised about the treatment of detainees and the potential for human rights violations during such operations.

Following the arrests, all detainees have been processed and handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for further investigation. The Ghanaian government has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding its digital environment and maintaining its international reputation. Future operations are expected as authorities continue to monitor and dismantle cybercrime networks within the country.
