Changes in NHS Dental Services in North Wales

Several dental practices in North Wales are set to terminate their NHS contracts, with the most notable being Belmont House Dental in Rhos-on-Sea, Bryn Siriol in Mold, Castle Square in Caernarfon, Penlan in Pwllheli, and Cemaes Bay. These practices have announced their intention to withdraw from NHS service effective March 31, 2026, primarily due to dissatisfaction with the Welsh Government’s Dental Reform Consultation outcomes. This decision could potentially affect nearly 7,000 patients who rely on these services.

In contrast to the other practices, Bulkeley Dental Practice in Bangor has retracted its notice to terminate its NHS contract after discussions with the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB). Tehmeena Ajmal, the chief operating officer at BCUHB, expressed satisfaction with Bulkeley's decision to continue providing NHS services beyond the previously announced termination date. Ajmal noted that the Health Board is exploring further commissioning opportunities to address the gaps left by the terminating practices.

Tehmeena Ajmal stated, “We were naturally disappointed to learn that a small number of dental practices in North Wales have given notice of their intention to terminate their NHS contracts.” She emphasized that the Health Board is committed to finding new providers to ensure continued access to dental care for patients. Meanwhile, Clwyd West MS Darren Millar voiced his concerns regarding the broader implications of these contract terminations, highlighting the ongoing dental access crisis in North Wales. Millar remarked, “It is absolutely barbaric in this day and age, and the situation seems to be getting worse by the day.”

The decision of several dental practices to withdraw from NHS services has sparked significant criticism. Darren Millar criticized the Welsh Government for ignoring warnings from the dental profession about the potential fallout from the new contract terms. He pointed out that constituents are resorting to extreme measures, such as traveling to Scotland or even Albania for dental care, due to the lack of accessible services in Wales.

In light of the impending contract terminations, BCUHB plans to explore new commissioning opportunities to fill the gaps left by the departing practices. The Health Board has already seen the opening of new NHS dental services following previous commissioning exercises and anticipates more openings in the coming year.
