Portugal's Renewable Energy Revolution: Achievements and Future Directions

Portugal has made significant strides in its transition to renewable energy, particularly highlighted by its achievement of running on renewable sources for six consecutive days from October 31 to November 6, 2023. During this period, the country generated 1,102 GWh of power, exceeding its consumption needs by over 20%. This accomplishment included a record 131 hours without reliance on fossil fuels and 95 hours where renewable energy alone met consumption demands. The national grid operator, Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN), noted that these milestones demonstrated Portugal's sustainable energy trajectory.
