Surge in Indian Tourism to the United States

1/23/2026, 7:47:25 PM

Significant Growth in Visitor Numbers

Travel from India to the United States has experienced a remarkable resurgence, with visitation increasing by 40 percent compared to pre-pandemic levels. In 2025, over two million Indian travelers visited the U.S., solidifying India's position as the second-largest overseas source market for U.S. tourism. This growth is attributed to rising disposable incomes, enhanced travel sophistication, and a growing interest among Indian travelers to explore destinations beyond traditional entry points like New York and San Francisco.

Brand USA president and CEO Fred Dixon highlighted this trend during his visit to Bengaluru for the 12th edition of Brand USA Travel Week India. He noted that Indian travelers are increasingly venturing into secondary cities and national parks, reflecting a shift in travel behavior. This expanding footprint underscores the importance of the Indian market, which now ranks among the top ten source markets for most U.S. destinations.

Economic Impact and Visitor Spending

Indian tourists are not only significant in terms of volume but also in spending. They are the second-highest spending group among overseas visitors, contributing approximately $24.4 billion to the U.S. economy in 2024. Indian travelers typically stay longer and spend more per trip, making them a vital component of the U.S. tourism economy. As a result, U.S. hotels in tech hubs like Austin and Raleigh are reporting double-digit growth in Indian corporate spending.

Upcoming Global Events and Future Prospects

The outlook for travel from India to the U.S. remains positive, particularly with major global events on the horizon. The FIFA World Cup in June and July 2026, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the United States, is expected to further boost interest in U.S. travel. Additionally, the centennial of Route 66 is anticipated to attract Indian travelers interested in classic American road trips. Dixon expressed optimism about future growth, stating that Brand USA is actively promoting these events.

Criticism and Challenges

Despite the positive trends, challenges remain, particularly concerning visa processing. Lengthy visa wait times have been cited as a bottleneck, with analysts suggesting that if backlogs were reduced to under 60 days, Indian arrivals could exceed three million by 2027, generating an additional $4 billion in export revenue for the U.S. Indian outbound travel bodies have urged the U.S. government to restore domestic-renewal options for H-1B and B-1/B-2 visas to sustain this momentum.

Official Statements & Responses

Fred Dixon remarked, “We’re thrilled that travel to the United States from India continues to grow at an incredible pace.” He emphasized the significance of the Indian market, stating, “India is a priority growth market and a major contributor to U.S. visitation.” Additionally, Brand USA is launching the "America the Beautiful" campaign in India to inspire travel and convert interest into bookings.

What's Next

Looking ahead, Brand USA plans to introduce a Global Ambassador Program in March 2026, engaging travel trade ambassadors worldwide to promote U.S. travel and culture. This initiative aligns with the upcoming major events and aims to further strengthen the travel corridor between India and the United States.
