Erin Jackson: From Roller Skating to Olympic Gold

Erin Jackson, a prominent figure in speedskating, made history at the 2022 Beijing Olympics by becoming the first Black woman to win an individual gold medal at a Winter Olympics, specifically in the 500-meter event. Following her victory, Jackson recognized the importance of leveraging her newfound fame, engaging in various speaking engagements and promotional activities. Despite facing recent injuries, she successfully qualified for the upcoming Milano Cortina Olympics, winning both the 500-meter and 1,000-meter races at the U.S. Olympic trials in January 2026. Jackson's athletic journey began in her childhood in Ocala, Florida, where she initially engaged in roller skating. She was named the U.S. Olympic Committee's athlete of the year for roller sports three times between 2012 and 2015. Jackson graduated cum laude from the University of Florida with a degree in materials science and engineering in 2015. Her introduction to ice skating occurred in late 2016 while visiting the Netherlands, leading to her relocation to Salt Lake City in 2017 to train full-time with U.S. Speedskating.

Jackson's path to Olympic success was not without challenges. During the 2022 Olympic trials, she unexpectedly finished third in the 500 meters, missing direct qualification. However, fellow athlete Brittany Bowe, who won the event, selflessly relinquished her spot to ensure Jackson could compete in Beijing. This act of camaraderie culminated in Jackson's gold medal win, while Bowe secured a bronze in the 1,000 meters.

In addition to her athletic achievements, Jackson has pursued further education, obtaining an associate degree in computer science and studying business and kinesiology at Salt Lake Community College. She aspires to enter the biomechanics field, inspired by her interactions with Paralympic athletes and a desire to contribute to advancements in prosthetics.
