A significant concern regarding free-living amoebae is their ability to act as hosts for other harmful pathogens. This phenomenon, referred to as the "Trojan horse effect," enables bacteria and viruses to survive within amoebae, shielded from standard disinfection processes. Consequently, these pathogens can travel through water systems undetected, raising the risk of human infection and contributing to the growing issue of antibiotic resistance.

Calls for a Coordinated Response

Researchers advocate for a One Health strategy that integrates public health, environmental science, and water management to address the risks posed by free-living amoebae. This approach emphasizes the need for improved surveillance, faster diagnostic tools, and advanced water treatment technologies to mitigate risks before infections occur. “Amoebae are not just a medical issue or an environmental issue,” Shu asserts. “They sit at the intersection of both, and addressing them requires integrated solutions that protect public health at its source.”
