Shift to Navigator UI in Horizon OS
Starting with Horizon OS version 85, Meta Platforms, Inc. will implement the Navigator user interface (UI) as the default experience for users of its Quest headsets. This change was announced by a Meta Community Manager, who indicated that the rollout of Navigator will begin later this year, coinciding with the gradual removal of the Horizon Feed feature. The Navigator UI aims to consolidate experiences, friends, and settings into a single interface, enhancing user accessibility.
Features of the Navigator UI
The Navigator UI represents a significant overhaul of the existing interface, which has remained largely unchanged since the launch of the Oculus Go over seven years ago. The previous system architecture featured a floating horizontal menu bar known as the Universal Menu, which displayed essential information and shortcuts. In contrast, Navigator introduces a large overlay that integrates key system interfaces, such as the app Library, Quick Settings, and Notifications, into a more cohesive user experience. Users will also have the ability to pin up to ten items in their library, similar to the Start Menu on Windows.
The updated Navigator UI includes a new Worlds tab for accessing Horizon Worlds destinations and a People tab that provides shortcuts to friends. Additionally, the interface allows users to manage their 2D windows more efficiently through simple gestures on the Meta Touch controller.
Removal of Horizon Feed
The Horizon Feed, which has served as the default 2D app upon booting the Quest headset, is being phased out due to its perceived ineffectiveness. Originally designed to showcase suggested Horizon Worlds destinations, store apps, and social media content, the feed has been criticized for not engaging users effectively. According to Meta's internal assessments, the feed has not driven significant revenue or user interaction, as many users tend to dismiss it immediately upon startup.
Meta's Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, acknowledged that the company's emphasis on promoting Horizon Worlds may have negatively impacted user experience. He expressed a commitment to refocusing on third-party content and improving the overall ecosystem for users.
Official Statements & Responses
In a post on the Meta Community Forums, the Community Manager stated, "As announced during Connect, we’ve been testing Navigator and will ramp up the rollout later this year." This sentiment reflects the company's strategic shift towards enhancing user engagement through a more streamlined interface.
Criticism & Opposition
Despite the positive outlook from Meta, some users may view the removal of Horizon Feed as a loss of a familiar feature. Critics argue that the feed, while not perfect, provided a starting point for users to discover new content. The decision to phase it out raises questions about how effectively Navigator will fulfill similar functions.
What's Next
The transition to the Navigator UI is set to begin with the release of Horizon OS v85, although no specific date has been announced. As Meta continues to refine its VR ecosystem, the company will likely monitor user feedback closely to ensure that the new interface meets the needs of its community.
